EEG Artifact Recognition

Electrical and Environmental Artifacts

The most common electrical artifact is due interference from power lines and equipment. This background interference is more likely to be picked up by faulty electrodes. However, even with good recording electrodes, electrical interference from a laptop or cell phone and their chargers, or from equipment in the ICU, may appear as solid black lines in one or a few channels.
